19 Months

Here we are at 19 months, closer to 2 years than 1 year!  I can hardly believe it!  Here is a not-so-quick update.  I always get carried away, but I don't want to forget all these things.

- Jesse loves his books more than ever.  If we are at home, he spends the majority of his time looking at books and bringing books to us to read.  I realized the other day that I have hardly picked up any toys all week because he only wants to get out books.  He has a really great attention span when it comes to books, but a much shorter one when it comes to playing with toys.  Some favorite books are Grover Sleeps Over, Freight Train, Green Eggs and Ham, and Cranes.

- He loves to "read" us his books.  He goes through the pages, giving us one-word explanations of each one.

- Jesse got a stuffed Curious George from Grandma and he was instantly attached.  He takes George lots of places and pretends to feed him and put him to sleep.

- Just this past week or so, Jesse has begun to speak in a lot of two-word phrases.  Some that come to mind are "Mommy sleepy", "Daddy work", "Mommy a girl" and "Daddy a boy".

- He still really loves cranes.  One of his favorite books right now is a book about different types of cranes and the parts of a crane.  He gets so excited every time we see one in the neighborhood.

- When we go to our nearby produce store, Jesse begs for cookies because the cashiers always give cookies to the kids in the check-out line.  A couple weeks ago I realized he was quietly saying "coooookieeeeee" when we were in line.  Now he is not quiet at all.  In fact, today he was saying "coooookieeeeee" from the moment we walked in the store.  I'm pretty sure the cashier thought he was a starving child.

- It's so fun to be able to see Jesse's ability to communicate grow and grow.  The other day Jesse was at the table eating his afternoon snack and he looked at me and said "walk.....school".  I took this to mean that he wanted to go see James at school (a few times we have taken a walk to campus to walk home with James), so I asked him if he wanted to go see Daddy.  He nodded vigorously and pointed to the hallway and said "stroller".  As soon as he was down from his chair he went to his room and got his shoes and was trying his very hardest to get them on his feet so we could go.  Then he was at the door banging on it and yelling "Daddy!".  So sweet.

- Still loves to help around the house.  If he is in another room and hears me loading or unloading silverware in the dishwasher he runs into the kitchen and asks to help by saying "help...fork", because he loves loading and unloading utensils.  He also loves to help Daddy take out the trash and the recycling.

- We always say a prayer with Jesse before bed, and Jesse now likes to add to the prayer by saying "church" and "park", so we make sure to include those in the things we are thankful for.  It's hard to tell how much he really understands of what we're doing, but he clearly wants to participate by adding to the prayer.

- Over the past couple weeks, Jesse has become quite possessive when playing with other kids.  Previously he might get upset if another kid took a toy away, but now he doesn't want anyone to even come near the toys he is playing with (especially the Cozy Coupe in the tot lot and the slides on the playground).

- He is still a really good eater, although last week he refused dinner almost every night and didn't eat well throughout the day either.  This week he is back to his normal self and is eating everything we give him and more.

Peanut butter is a messy snack.  Jesse loves to dip apple slices in peanut butter.

Here is Jesse's new "book nook".  I got this bookshelf down in our laundry room (there is a place where people can put things they want to get rid of so that others in the building can take anything they want) and painted it while we were in Arkansas.  This is where we spend lots of time when we are home.  Of course, it doesn't usually look this neat.
